Is your 10 year old an avid reader or an astute reader?(This was how my english teacher decribed her students) The imagination of a PreTeen can be very vivid during this period of growth, watch for the tell tale signs of them gushing while daydreami…

Ok, I'm going to play devils advocate, what do you think is not 'age appropriate' about the books? Have you read them? I have and as a 22 year old woman who's been reading romance and post highschool books since she was your daughters age, 10, I fel…

Ultimately, as a mom, you have to make that decision based on your child's maturity level. Growing up, I read books that were not age appropriate, missed much of what was going on, and had to go back and re-read them as an adult. Books about sex did…

wow, that is tough because TWI-HARDS ARE EVERYWHERE! You cannot turn on the TV without seeing Rob Pattinson or Taylor Lautner being interviewed. Have you mentioned to Olivia (BTW, one of the most popular girls names this year) that this is not age a…

I have a dilemma. Olivia wants to start reading the Twilight series and see the movies and thus far, I haven’t allowed it because at only 10 years old, I don’t think the series is age-appropriate for my girl. I’m an avid reader and Olivia is also b…

well I guess that is the upside of it. But shame on Tommy's father.. Come on man, ask your co workers or your kid, what they would like to do! A scavenger hunt is easy to do! Oh well.. kind of sad for Tommy, huh? BTW, I'll bet Tommy's mother was pis…

Rene, I hear you and I don't think families need to spend a lot of money for kids to have a good time. I don't think this cat put any thought into coordinating a few activities, i.e. a scavenger hunt. You also hit the nail on the head because Tommy'…

Hmm.. I have questions.. Is Tommy's family watching their pennies ( as so many of us are) because a planned activity can be expensive. Even renting a bounce house costs a couple hundred bucks an hour. That being said, it doesn't really cost any mone…

ok... recently I've been making a huge effort to be more active. I'm now taken a Zumba class once a week- lots of fun, and last Sunday I took a floor-barre class at a local dance studio. It kicked my booty, but felt so good. Unfortunately, the class…

Under Pressure

I have a dilemma. Olivia wants to start reading the Twilight series and see the movies and thus far, I haven’t allowed it because at only 10 years old, I don’t think the series is age-appropriate for my girl.
I’m an avid reader and Olivia is also becoming an avid reader and that makes me ecstatic. On one hand, I’m happy she’s interested in reading the books,… Continue

Is It a Party?

What are the base requirements for an 8 yr. old boys’ birthday party?

I ask, because of what transpired last Sunday when I asked Lovermn to take Yannick to his buddy, Tommy’s (not his real name), birthday party. We received the invitation on Thursday for Sunday’s party. Sure, I know everybody’s busy as all get out, but jeez! I need more than 48 hours notice! Anyway, I promised Yannick we’d do our best to make Tommy’s party while I said a silent prayer of thanks because at least it was on Sunday… Continue

An Upside of Tweendom

At 10 ½, Olivia is moving full-steam ahead into tweendom and yes, I often find myself taken aback when I or her brother or Loverman find ourselves face-to-face with one of her seemingly unprovoked funk-isms. Sure, I understand she’s maturing, growing, changing, but like my grandmother used to say… “Miss Thing is really smelling herself these days!”

One unexpected upside of this new and not-so improved Miss Olivia is her desire to earn some extra cash. I’m not one to pay for things she should na… Continue

A Need to Wean

We take homework very seriously in this household--- come in the house after school, grab a snack and get down to the business of homework before any other activities commence. This has been the Mango Tribe’s m.o. since Olivia started kindergarten six years ago.
At first, I’d sit with Olivia and make sure she… Continue
