Have you read Curly Girl? It's by a white woman but there is a chapter on African American hair. But this woman is big on co washing.. says she doesn't ever use shampoo. I use a sulfate free shampoo from the health food store which has done wonders with regard to keeping my hair moist and frizz-less! I use JBCO and Meadowfoam seed oil which has a great rate of absorption.

Also the conditioner I use is "cone free" silicone, dimethicone anything that ends in cone.. because that coats the hair (that's why it feels so silky afterward) and creates build up that needs to be stripped every so often or the hair will get dry and brittle and lackluster.

Check out hairlista.com, a hair social networking site. I have learned so much there!

I've had my hair trimmed 3 times in the past year. I did not realize that it had gotten as long as it has until I got it blown out. It is not all one length but layered. The thought I was the only person doing that "cowash" thing. My friends laugh when I tell them about rinsing with conditioner in the shower everyday. My hair is very dry so I am going to try the Jamican Black Castor Oil and do better about wrapping it up at night.

LOL the camera is being held hostage by the 16 year old.. funny. I started using Miss Jessie's but my new absolute favorite product is Curly Whip by Hair Rules. You apply in the shower, then I sit under the dryer until it's about 85 percent dry (20 mins maybe) then diffuse dry the rest, which adds a little volume to it. i LOVE this stuff.. I feel like I must have gone through a hair growth spurt sometime over the summer because one minute it was short and I was pining for length then BOOM. It could be that I stopped paying so much attention to it. Still used good techniques, no heat, baggying at night, sleeping with a bonnet, and lo and behold it started to grow. How many times did you trim your hair in that year and a half period? So is it layered or one length?

As soon as I liberate my camera from my 16 year old son I will take and post a picture. My hair is similar in texture to yours, what are you using? I have been using Miss Jessie's prducts but I am looking for something new.

Dana, so basically a year and a half it grew to shoulder length? I am dying for my hair to get all big and floppy. It is growing pretty fast and I am just now at the stage where I don't feel like it's sooooo short.. It's at the "cute" short stage as opposed to the SHORT short stage, LOL. Please post a photo.. if for nothing else, inspiration for me :)

I got my last relaxer July 2008. I finally had all of the relaxer cut off on January 29, 2009. I did not document my progress monthly but my hair has now grown to shoulder length with no breakage.

So happy for you. I have gone natural for sometime now but I get tempted. My daughter loves by Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding I don't really care for the constant hair maintenance too lazy and I don't care for the hours spent in a salon either - just a mess I tell ya but I am hanging in there as best as I can
